Committee Reports:
Fishing Contest – Andy Buck (Tekeni) and Justin Hofer (Easka) were this year’s winners.
Adopt-A-Highway – 16 members cleaned up the 2.5-mile stretch of Route 28 that runs by the Okara Lakes. Lynn Otto found a wallet containing $70, a driver’s license, credit card, and a blank check! Using a cell phone, Lynn was able to contact the very surprised individual and return it to him. (FYI – Lynn was the lucky winner last year of finding the most bizarre item during clean up – we’re not mentioning what it was) Best of luck next year Lynn!
History Committee – If you have not visited your camp in a while, you may find a questionnaire concerning the history of your camp. Anything you know about its history would be helpful in this process. Funny stories, construction notes, or what was going on in the area at the time. Copies of old photos would especially be of interest. A motion was made to make a $100 donation to the Historical Association.
50th Year Celebration – Pat Tappan announced that the party would be held on August 9th, 2008 – Save the date! Anyone wishing to help with the various committees should contact Pat at (315) 369-6778.
Lake Weeds – Maggie Tonklinson reported that a diver examined the Easka Lake bottom and reported that the deeper parts are weed-free. The only “invasive” species were yellow water lilies – white are native. Waterfront residents may clear weeds from their immediate shore in the amount of 200 sq. ft. Alternative suggestions are benthic mats – check this following website for additional information www.An_Insiders_Guide_to_BenthicBarriers.doc
Old Business .
The Town of Webb Attorney has engaged an expert consultant to prepare/argue the case to leave the section of Okara Road West in place. The APA and Board of Commissioners will review this in November. Stay tuned.
A petition was submitted to the Town of Webb to have the stretch of Route 28 (by the Okara Lakes) investigated with the DOT to see if it can be a no passing zone.
Water testing has been going on both lakes and frozen samples will be turned in this fall. A report will be due in the spring. Jim Hofer (Easka) and George Pearson (Tekeni) have been the trained water testers.
New Business
There had been numerous complaints about a specific property on Okara Road West. The building was missing windows and roof sections and had a great deal of debris strewn around. The Codes officer was successful in working with the owner to secure the property.
Garbage continues to be a problem – residents leave trash out on a Sunday for a Tuesday pick-up. Neighbors are encouraged to either contact the resident or call the police.
Lake Easka could apply for a bass-stocking permit. No action was taken.
Beavers are busy clogging the dam and the channel between the lake and outlet pond. A permit has been obtained to remove debris and the beaver.
Additional News around the Lakes – The weather has been fantastic – a genuine extension of summer.
The Gillett’s’ have reported that they were successful in selling their camp to children of one of our residents.
The Cross has been replaced on the rock outcropping above Lake Easka.
This summer the beaver had made quite a mess of the outlet bridge and the channel connection the lake and pond. A variety of neighbors volunteered to keep the areas free of debris. The President has obtained a permit to remove debris from the dam and channel and the beaver will be trapped this October.
